Philosophy Statement for the Music Program
Cultures are identified by certain common components. Music is one of those defining elements. Music cannot be avoided in our culture. It is with us wherever we go. Our stores, our restaurants, our malls, and our doctors’ offices all recognize the effect that music has on our emotions and attitudes.
It is our desire at NHCS to reflect a culture that places our position as Christians above all that this world has to offer. NHCS strives to promote and protect each of the critical components of its culture from those elements that conflict with biblical principles.
First, we believe that the message of music is not neutral. Music has a message, and it is an effective means of “selling” a message. The music of this world can be expected to promote this world’s message. NHCS is interested in teaching, promoting, and protecting godly music. Music that glorifies God in its message is one part of the NHCS music standards.
Next, we believe that the beat of music is not neutral. Musicians recognize that the beat of music affects our emotions and our spirits. Music that causes one to “be moved” emotionally is not necessarily “good music.” Good music puts our spirits at ease and does not play with our emotions. Music that causes us to relax and provides a calming effect on us is part of the accepted standard.
Finally, we believe that music reflects who we really are. Much of what today’s Christians call Christian music is performed by artists whose dress, lifestyles, and music styles mimic the world from which we are trying to protect our children. Why model ourselves after the very appearance of the people that we oppose? NHCS will use and allow only music that can be seen as being done to God’s glory rather than to satisfy man’s approval, tastes, or trends. Remember every culture has its music! What music do we want to represent us as Christians and why?
With these standards in mind, NHCS will take no part in promoting music, music concerts, music performers, or other events that use rock music, contemporary Christian music, or any form of music that, in the mind of the administration, is done to reflect other than a distinctly Christian culture.
